What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that our doctors can place over your teeth to restore the look and function of your smile. At Czaplicki Family Dentistry in Milwaukee, WI, we use only the highest-quality crowns to:

  • Protect teeth that have been damaged or weakened.
  • Restore individual missing teeth.

Our dentists, Drs. Don and Cathleen Czaplicki, offer all-porcelain crowns that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. In some cases, we are able to create and place customized crowns in just one appointment.

Same-Day Crowns Unbeatable Convenience

Placing a crown using traditional methods generally requires multiple office visits. The initial visit involves taking impressions of your bite and the placement of a temporary crown. Then, a dental laboratory takes a few weeks to craft your permanent dental restoration. Once ready, you return to the dentist in order to remove the temporary crown and have your permanent restoration placed.

The advanced CEREC® system used at our Milwaukee, WI, dental office means you can skip the awkward temporary crown and a second appointment. Our dentists can create and place a crown in a single visit with our revolutionary CEREC machine, which precisely manufactures a custom-designed crown out of durable, lifelike porcelain in less than an hour. This saves you time and the hassle of dealing with a temporary crown, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of your restored tooth immediately.

The Same-Day Crown Process

When you visit our Milwaukee-area office to receive a same-day crown, here's what you can expect:
CEREC technology can produce your permanent crown in less than an hour.
CEREC technology can produce your permanent crown in less than an hour.

Tooth Preparation

Before we can cap your tooth with a crown, one of our dentists will have to remove any decay. In the process, your tooth will be reshaped so that a crown can fit snugly alongside your other teeth. We will use local anesthetic to ensure your comfort.

Digital Scans

Once your tooth has been prepared, we will take a digital scan of your bite. Because we use precise digital technology, you won't have to be subjected to uncomfortable dental putty.

Crown Fabrication

Next, our dentists will upload your scans to the CEREC machine. The system will process your scan and then create a custom-fitted crown out of premium dental porcelain. The entire fabrication process takes less than an hour.

Crown Placement

Once the machine has created your new crown, we can place it over your tooth right then and there. You'll walk out of our office with a beautiful smile and a fully functional bite.

I've been coming here for about eight years. Dr. Don fixed what multiple other dentists couldn't. He did a great job whitening too. I still travel to see him.

What Can Crowns Solve? a Number of Dental Issues

A crown requires a minimum amount of healthy dental tissue for support. Extraction may be necessary if your tooth has been too compromised to support a crown. In such cases, our Milwaukee-area dentists can restore the gap in your smile with a crown supported by a dental implant.

Decay and Trauma

A tooth with significant damage due to decay or trauma can be strengthened by a dental crown when a filling, inlay, or onlay cannot provide the necessary coverage.

Root Canal

When decay reaches the inner portion of a tooth, root canal therapy is required to avoid extraction. After cleaning out the inner tissues of the tooth, our dentists place a crown to protect the remaining tooth structure.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Crowns can conceal cosmetic imperfections such as intrinsic stains, broken teeth, and disproportionate teeth when porcelain veneers and dental bonding do not provide enough coverage.

Tooth Loss

An implant-supported crown can replace a single missing tooth. Not only do dental implants provide a strong base for crowns, but they also prevent the jawbone atrophy that follows tooth loss.

Emergency Care Available

Our doctors are available to treat dental emergencies. If you have a painful toothache, an existing crown has broken or become dislodged, or you've had a tooth knocked out, get in touch with our Milwaukee-area office as soon as possible. We will schedule an appointment promptly and give you the attention you need.

If your emergency requires a crown, we'll let you know if you qualify for same-day crown treatment.

Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns can be used for a variety of restorative and cosmetic purposes. Our dentists will recommend the best type of crown to meet your individual needs and help you reach your dental health goals.
Traditional Crowns

Traditional Crowns

A traditional crown may be used after a tooth has suffered extensive decay beyond the point of being able to be treated with a filling, or after it has been weakened from root canal therapy. A crown can also address a discolored natural tooth that does not respond to professional teeth whitening treatment.

Implant-Supported Crowns

Implant-Supported Crowns

A dental implant is a titanium or ceramic post that is surgically embedded in the jaw to provide a stable foundation for a dental restoration. Dental implants provide a number of advantages, including unmatched security for dental crowns.

Dental Bridge

Dental Bridges

Used to literally bridge the gap left by multiple missing, a dental bridge is held in place by adjacent healthy teeth that have been fitted with specialized crowns. These crowns are designed with fixtures that securely hold the dental bridge in place.

Insurance and Financing

Most dental insurance plans will contribute towards the cost of dental crown treatment. Our friendly team can help you review your policy and file your claims for you to maximize your benefits. Contact us to find out if we accept your insurance plan.

If you don't have insurance, or if your insurance won't cover the complete cost of your dental crown, we can help you secure financing through CareCredit®. CareCredit is a reputable third-party lender that works like a credit card for healthcare services. Qualifying patients can use CareCredit to pay for dentistry with no-interest or low-interest monthly payments.

Just Interested in Cosmetics? Consider Porcelain Veneers

If you are interested in a crown just because you want to improve the appearance of an imperfect tooth, you might want to consider a dental veneer.

Veneers are like wafer-thin shells. While crowns cover the entire tooth structure, veneers only attach to the front surfaces of teeth, making them a less invasive treatment option.

At our Milwaukee-area practice, we excel at cosmetic dentistry. If you want to improve the appearance of your smile, request a consultation with our team today. We'll help you consider all of the available options so you can make the right decision for you.
