View on GoogleHow Dental Implants Work
An implant-supported restoration consists of three parts:
- The implant, which is a titanium prosthetic tooth root.
- The abutment, which connects the dental implant to the restoration.
- The restoration (a bridge, crown, or denture).
We will explore the procedure in greater detail a little later, but to summarize:
- The oral surgeon creates a pilot hole in the jaw before placing the implant, which becomes fused with the jaw over a period of three to six months.
- Once healing is confirmed, the abutment is placed on the implant.
- In a few weeks, once the gums have healed around the abutment, your dentist can place the restoration.
Dental Implant Placement in Action
The implant, abutment, and restoration work together to completely replace a tooth from the root to the chewing surface.
Protect Your Jaw with Dental Implants
The roots of your natural teeth play a crucial role in maintaining the strength of your jawbone. After a tooth is lost, the bone tissue in your jaw begins to shrink, or atrophy. Left untreated, this issue can lead to further tooth loss and even affect the shape of your face. In fact, jawbone atrophy can actually make you look older than you are.
Titanium implants effectively replace missing tooth roots, preventing further bone atrophy, improving your jaw health, and keeping your facial features as youthful as possible. It's the closest thing to having your natural teeth back.

At our Milwaukee-area practice, we use state-of-the-art diagnostic and imaging tools to plan your dental implant treatment. For example, all of our x-rays are performed digitally.
In addition, our ORTHOPHOS® SL 3D imaging system creates high-definition, panoramic views of your jaw, allowing us to identify the optimal positions for each implant.
When it comes to the implants themselves, we mostly use the Astra Tech Implant System, one of the most reliable implant brands in the world.

With CEREC
Thanks to the CEREC® machine at our Hales Corners, WI, office, we can create a lifelike, long-lasting dental crown during a single appointment.
Using our CBCT imaging technology, our dentists can create 3D images of your teeth and make a restoration that matches the shape and color of your smile. We use strong ceramic materials that can withstand the force of a bite. Once your gums have healed from the implant placement surgery, our dentists can attach your CEREC-made crown to an implant with an abutment.
We Can Restore Your Candidacy For Dental Implants
In order to qualify for dental implant surgery, patients must have a sufficient amount of jawbone tissue around the tooth gap and healthy gums. If you have poor oral health, our Hales Corners, WI, dentists serving Greater Milwaukee recommend the following treatments:
Bone Grafting
If left untreated, the bone structure in your jaw will continuously recede after you lose a tooth. A lack of jawbone density compromises the success rate of dental implant surgery and can cause your remaining teeth to shift out of place. Our dentist's office can coordinate with a skilled oral surgeon to rebuild jawbone density using grafts or donor bone tissue.
Periodontal Care
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is an inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria. In order for the titanium implants to fuse and heal with bone tissue, the gums must be healthy. The dentists at our office serving the Milwaukee, WI, area can perform scaling and root planing. This deep clean restores the health of your gums and your candidacy for dental implants.
Gum Grafting
If you've lost gum tissue due to periodontal disease, tooth loss, or age, gum grafting can help. Soft tissue grafts can restore your gumline, allowing you to get dental implants. Since people missing teeth for a long time suffer from bone loss and gum recession, gum grafting can be a good complementary procedure to bone grafting.
Tooth Extraction
Our dentists will make every effort to preserve your natural teeth. However, if a tooth is too compromised to be treated with a root canal procedure, we recommend extraction. If left untreated, the infection in the tooth can spread through the gums and other teeth. After removing the tooth, we can reassess your candidacy for dental implants.

Every case is unique, but in general, a single tooth implant costs on average between $2,600 and $2,800 at Czaplicki Family Dentistry in Hales Corners, WI, near Milwaukee. This cost includes the implant, abutment, and restoration, but not the surgeon's fee or additional treatments that may be needed. Most Patients Return to Work Two to Three Days after Surgery
While it will take three to six months for your implants to completely integrate, the initial healing process is much shorter. You may experience swelling, bleeding, or discomfort for the first 48 hours or so after implant surgery.
During this time, you should:
- Avoid strenuous physical activity
- Use ice packs to reduce swelling
- Take all prescribed medications
- Be careful when brushing
Dr. Czaplicki serving Greater Milwaukee can give you more detailed recovery instructions before your procedure so you can prepare for your recovery following surgery.
Diet Considerations During Your Recovery
You will receive temporary restorations to wear while your implants fuse to the jawbone, which will allow you to enunciate and maintain a normal appearance. Your implant-supported restoration will eventually provide the same functionality as a natural tooth when it comes to biting and chewing tough and crunchy foods. But during the healing phase, you should take care to limit your diet to soft foods.
For the first 24 hours after surgery, it is recommended that you only consume liquids, shakes, smoothies, and other liquified foods. Afterward, you will need to limit your diet to soft foods such as pasta, avocado, hummus, yogurt, and eggs.
Dr. Czaplicki will monitor your recovery to determine when each phase of treatment should begin. Once you have received your permanent restorations, feel free to celebrate by enjoying any foods you choose—your restored smile can handle it!
Caring for Your Dental Implants
With proper care, you can expect your dental implants to last 40 years or more. Although crowns, bridges, and dentures typically need to be replaced about every 10 years, the implants can provide incredible benefits for the rest of your life. Fortunately, it's not difficult to maintain your implants. Let's take a look at how you can protect your investment in top-tier tooth replacement:
Maintain Your Daily Oral Hygiene Routine
Whether you have all of your natural teeth or a complete set of implant-supported dentures, one thing holds true: you have to brush at least twice and floss at least once every day to prevent plaque and tartar buildup and avoid developing periodontal disease. Fortunately, the same brushing and flossing techniques you apply to natural teeth are effective at cleaning implant-supported restorations.
Undergo a Dental Checkup Every Six Months
Once again, this holds true for everyone, whether they have many dental implants or none. During these checkups, your dentist can make sure your mouth is free of plaque and tartar that could affect the health of your gums and jawbone. If you wear a fixed implant denture, your dentist can remove it and provide a thorough cleaning.
Don't Ignore Dental Issues
If you notice any symptoms of a dental problem, such as swollen gums, sudden pain, or a loose implant, reach out to us so we can arrange to meet with you as soon as possible. By addressing these issues as soon as possible, we can prevent implant failure and other issues.
